  1. Log into your family Infinite Campus Account
  2. Click on the 3 lines (top left)
  3. Click on "more"

Mid-Year Expectation Walks

Each year we take time to review the school expectations when we return from break with all of your students as a friendly reminder.

Stations will include:

Hallway
Lunch/Recess
Writing Data Review - Perseverance & Expectations in Writing

These stations will be facilitated by 5th-grade students and staff members and will be held on Thursday, January 11th, and Friday, January 12th.   Feel free to ask your child the expectations for each of these areas as another review opportunity.

From Our Behavior Facilitator

Let’s start out 2024 on the right foot! Please review the below tips and tricks for making the transition back from break as seamless as possible.

Tip #1: Lead by example
Want your child to begin readjusting to his or her school schedule before going back? Show them how by doing it yourself. It’s not just kids who alter their activity and sleeping habits during breaks. Parents often relax bedtimes and other structured parts of daily life.

Tip #2: Talk about going back to school
Kids can get as stressed as adults. And, just like grown-ups, kids learn to hide their anxiety or bury it. Going back to school can be very stressful for kids. Whether it’s feeling unprepared, nervous over encountering students they don’t get along with, or some other reason, kids may have feelings they are struggling with and not sharing.
As a parent, look for those signs of stress. Is your child moodier as school approaches? Do they lose their appetite? Are they withdrawn? Have you noticed a lack of energy in your child?

Tip #3: Prepare your student for class by picking up supplies and using calendars
Take a look at your child’s upcoming assignments and needed supplies. Ask your child if they have everything they need when school resumes. If not, go to the store with your student. Get them involved in the buying process. Encourage them to have a sense of ownership over what they need.

Tip #4: Get a good night’s sleep
Sleeping habits are often one of the first things altered during an extended break. Kids sleep in later in the morning. They stay up later at night. Getting back onto an appropriate sleep schedule is one of the biggest adjustments for going back to school.
Set a scheduled bedtime and stick to it several days before the holiday break ends. Your child will be in a much better position to readjust to daily school with a good night’s sleep.

Tip #5: Schedule reading times
A simple way to make going back to school easier for your child is implementing reading time. Schedule a minimum amount of reading time for your child each day. Reading is a foundational activity that keeps your brain limber and active.
You can take your child to your local library. Getting them out of the house (where all of the tempting time wasters are waiting) is an effective way to encourage more reading. The library offers endless opportunities for children to explore subjects.

Tip #6: Reduce screen time
This suggestion is hardly a surprise! Get them moving and doing other things. Brains need to be stimulated, and it’s too easy to slip into sluggish (from a mental standpoint) time-wasting with unlimited access to their tablets or cell phones.

Five Schools, One Book

You and your family are officially invited to participate in our Five Schools One Book reading project which will launch on Thursday, January 11th. All Early Childhood, K-5, and MidValley learners will attend an assembly and THEN get to solve a mystery to find their books. Everyone will be sent home with their very own copy of the book where they can participate in the weekly activities to earn raffle prizes.

Our goal is to build a community of lifelong readers, and we know that you play an essential role in encouraging your children to jump on board! Encourage your children to participate and enjoy this experience by reading and discussing the book with them. Please set aside time every night and develop a special reading routine together; or you could encourage more independent readers to maintain a reading schedule and discuss the book together. You and your child(ren) can also access videos of the book being read on the school website.

We can’t wait until January 11th!

School Improvement Plan Mid-Point Check-in

KST Goal: By February 2024, students in grades 1st - 5th achieving in the on and above level will increase by 25%, in the area of writing development in a Narrative writing piece. Based on the assessed pre-narrative in September and post-narrative in February.

On Tuesday, November 21st our SIP building team created a plan that asked for staff to self-reflect on the Writing Delivery Table and Writing Audit Form as a team/individual which was identified as an Action Item from our School Improvement Plan.

  • Teachers reflected on the proficient and approaching proficient statements and created action steps for any approaching proficiency statements that you have identified as an individual or team.

Teachers also had time to assess each student's mid-point writing and work collaboratively as a grade level to create the next steps to support our writers based on the information they received from the assessment. For our mid-point check-in, all 1st-5th grade students participated in a 90-minute writing piece over a three-day time span where a random sample of 25% of the grade level (1st-5th) provided us with our mid-point check-in data.

Our student's midpoint data:

PBP Professional Development

  1. What probing questions would you engage in with this child?

  2. What notes or data would you take?

          3. What are the next steps you would create with the student? Kaneland PBP

Supporting Writing at Home:

Writing is a terrific way for children to express their thoughts, creativity, and uniqueness. It is also a fundamental way in which children learn to organize ideas. And learning to write well helps children to be better readers.

When engaging in writing, young children often mirror what they see around them: adults and older children writing lists, letters, and text messaging. They are observing the way writing is used in our everyday lives.

WRITING AT HOME:
Here are some suggestions that engage your child in the writing process:
  • Have your child write instructions for taking care of the family pet. These will be useful as you plan your summer vacations!
  • Write a letter or thank you note to a relative. Talk through what your child wants to say before writing begins.
  • Make a shopping list before going to the grocery store.
  • Write an online review of a book or an item you recently purchased or a recipe you tried.
  • Talk about the presidential election and write a description of the kind of president you want.
  • Find a picture in the newspaper and write an article to accompany it.
  • Start keeping a personal diary, a household guestbook, or a baby book for a younger sibling.

From the Behavior Facilitator:

Did you know each person has an emotional piggy bank and every interaction we have impacts our running balance? Consider these strategies to ensure your child’s emotional piggy bank is an emotional goldmine.

What is an Emotional Bank Account?

An Emotional Bank Account is a metaphor that helps us visualize and nurture our relationships with our children. It’s how we stay emotionally connected. It works exactly like any regular savings account: You make deposits and withdrawals. And just like a regular bank account, it can have a positive balance or a negative one.

Making sure there are many more emotional deposits than withdrawals is critical for ensuring a child doesn’t go into overdraft. A child in emotional overdraft has no reserves. This means that when someone asks them to transition or do a less-than-desirable task, they have a big reaction that appears to come out of nowhere. That last withdrawal put them into overdraft!

As an example, think about all the instructions, questions, and corrections a child likely gets during the day at school. When you give one “simple” instruction they explode or melt down. Essentially, that “simple” instruction crossed the threshold into overdraft.

One of the ways we can prevent this “emotional overdraft” is by making more emotional deposits than withdrawals in a day. We must be intentional about filling up the piggy bank so that the next time life throws our kiddos a curveball, they have the emotional balance to handle the hit. Deposits build resilience.

You may be thinking, “Wait, I should never ask questions? No commands? My child doesn’t listen unless I raise my voice!” Please hear us… not all withdrawals are bad! As parents, we have to give our children instructions, set boundaries, and, at times, issue age-appropriate

Kaneland IgKnight Academy

The Kaneland Personalized Learning Academy is expanding to include 9th grade beginning the 2024-2025 school year. A family informational night for students going into grades 3-9 is being held on Wednesday, November 8th at the Kaneland Meredith Academic Center from 5:30-7:00 p.m. See the flyer below for details.

Veterans Day Celebration Reminder

On Friday, November 10th, 2023, Kaneland John Stewart Elementary School will be holding a Veterans Day celebration. We ask that all students dress in patriot colors.

Veterans will be honored with a morning breakfast which will take place at 8:10 a.m. in the teacher’s lounge. Our flag-raising ceremony will immediately follow in front of the school at 8:50.

We are inviting Legion members and KST parents or family members who are veterans to join us for both the breakfast and morning flag ceremony. We are hoping to have many veterans in attendance.

The 4th graders will also be presenting an afternoon choral concert that honors veterans in the gym at 2:45 p.m.

These annual events help teach our students about the importance of good citizenship. Please email Mary Kunstman, KST music teacher, at 10274@kaneland.org with any additional questions. We hope to see you there!

Halloween Parties, Parade, and Pictures

I could say with confidence that Halloween is one of the most favorite times of year for our students. They get so excited to wear their costumes and show them off to their classmates. The fun party and parade helped top off the day!   Thank you to all those who braved the crazy winter weather we had to watch our Halloween Parade. Click HERE to go to our Facebook Page to see our Halloween Pictures.

Kaneland John Stewart School Improvement Goal

This year's SIP (School Improvement Plan) for KST will be focused on writing. This goal was chosen based on years of low scores within this area. We are making an even stronger effort to prioritize writing and other writing opportunities throughout the school day.

Our goal is as follows: By February 2024, students in grades 1st - 5th achieving in the on and above level will increase by 25%, in the area of writing development in a Narrative writing piece. Based on the assessed pre-narrative in September and post-narrative in February.

Narrative writing is a style that allows the writer to tell a story. It can include actual events told in chronological order or it may include imagined events told in a timeline that the author creates. Narrative writing can sustain the reader's attention and help them visualize a realistic experience from the words.

Narrative data collection will occur in August, November, and February and will focus on narrative writing. The data collected will determine the rate of growth students will make within this goal. While kindergarten isn't explicitly part of this goal, they will still be getting their writing curriculum. They were excluded from the goal due to their large growth each year from non-writers to beginning writers typically growing by 75%. This data would have greatly impacted our overall scores if we would have left them in the rest of the school's data

While staff in all areas of the school will be supporting the writing goal, we need your help too!

Here are some tips to support your child's writing at home:

Provide a place for your child to write
The area should be an area that is quiet and well-lit. Stock the “writing center” with supplies such as paper, pencils, and crayons. You can also gather family photos and magazines in the center that can be used as story starters.

Read, read, read
The best activity to improve writing is reading. If your child reads good books, he will be a better writer. Reading exposes students to general vocabulary, word study, and content-specific vocabulary. Through reading, students see a variety of authors’ techniques that they can use in their own writing.

Encourage your child to keep a reflective journal with writing
This is excellent writing practice, as well as a good outlet for venting feelings. Encourage your child to write about things that happen at home and school. This reflective journal can be used to develop the “senses” of writing. Have your child write about what he saw, heard or felt on a trip or adventure. Provide experiences in your community that will interest your child and spark her writing. Especially encourage your child to write about personal feelings — pleasures as well as disappointments. When reading your child’s journal (only if your child invites you to, of course), share your own feelings and ideas paired with positive feedback about your child’s writing.

Provide authentic writing opportunities for your child
Have your child write his own thank-you notes, party invitations, and letters to family members. Let your child make the grocery list. Finding a pen pal for your child would make writing “real.” Helping children make the connection between writing and the “real” world will increase their interest in writing.

Be a writing role model
Make sure your child sees you as a writer. Point out times that you use writing to communicate with others. Discuss authentic writing in the community such as articles and letters in the newspaper, on billboards, or in written advertisements. Discuss the purpose of the writing and the target audience. When your child writes, you should write. You can schedule a day of the week that you will turn off the television and share your writing.

Start a vocabulary notebook
Teach your child new words each week and encourage her to use them. Make it into a game and give points for using the new words. Your child can keep a vocabulary notebook and get rewarded for the number of new words learned. The words will begin to appear like magic in her oral language and writing.

When writing at home, ask questions!
Always ask your child questions when he writes. Ask specific questions about your child’s writing such as: “How did that happen?” “How did that make you feel?” “Can you tell me more about that…?” “What are some other words you could use to describe…?”

Help your child publish her writing
Share her writing with others, place it on the refrigerator, or encourage her to write for kids’ magazines. When your child’s writing is published in a children’s book, she will be on her way to becoming a lifelong writer and author. Check out these options for publishing children’s work: Stone Soup      CyberKids

Parent/Teacher Conferences and Book Fair
We are all looking forward to the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences. We really enjoy connecting with our families and strengthening the relationship between home and school.
