April News

Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break. We are so excited to see the students again and to finish out the year strong!! Here are a few reminders as we transition back to school.

Parking Lot Procedures

Just a few reminders as there will be an increase in traffic at our school with all in-person students returning.  Your patience and adherence to our policies would be greatly appreciated in a smooth drop-off and pick-up routine.

All parents dropping off or picking up their child(ren) should use the west parking lot only. The main lot is reserved for buses during arrival and dismissal times. No cars should enter the main lot during arrival and dismissal.

Transportation

Busing
FYI - Should you have any questions or concerns related to busing, please be sure to contact the transportation department at 630-365-5111 x71145. The school office closes at 4:00pm and we are not always available in situations involving a late bus. The transportation department remains staffed until the last bus returns and will be your best bet for addressing bus needs after hours.
Also, just a reminder that students may NOT bring home any student outside of their household on the bus in order to keep seating charts consistent.

Car Riders
Please be sure car riders are exiting cars from the sidewalk side only. Please do not allow your child to exit your vehicle on the parking lot side due to the amount of traffic moving throughout the lot.  Parents do not get out of your car. If you do have to get out of your car to assist your child in exiting the vehicle, please make sure you park in a parking spot.  Please make sure everyone uses the crosswalk if parking.

Please remember that cars are prohibited from turning left off of Prairie Valley into our lot during arrival and dismissal and cell phone use is prohibited. We have asked the Elburn PD to increase monitoring of this area. Finally, be sure to use your turn signal if you are planning to turn right into the lot. Anticipating what drivers plan to do is challenging for our crossing guards if turn signals are not used.

Our dismissal begins at 3:25pm. Both of our parking lots are typically empty by 3:35ish, making most delays due to the volume of cars and buses, relatively short. We ask that all parents continue to review the parking lot procedures found HERE.

We kindly ask for your patience and compassion toward the staff members working to keep our parking lot safe for everyone during student arrival and dismissal. We recognize pulling all the way forward or waiting a few moments to pull away after picking up your child is not always convenient, but these simple actions support the greater goal of student safety. Please remember, the professional training and experience of the staff on "parking lot duty" is in the education field, not traffic control. They do their best each day and greatly appreciate positive feedback and demonstrations of grace. The hecticness of the parking lot during student arrival and dismissal is a perfect place to model kindness for our children.

Self-Certification

The following has been sent out to families since the beginning of the school year. Our goal is to keep our students IN school to learn - it works when EVERYONE follows these procedures.

Daily student attendance, we will be requiring families to self-certify that their child is healthy and not exhibiting any of the COVID-19 symptoms. It is imperative that if your child is displaying symptoms they stay home and follow the IDPH guidelines. Student (parent) self-certification that will be REQUIRED to complete each school no later than 8am. We would like for parents to login and try it out - some families have shared they will set an alarm to remind them daily on their phone.

  1. Please use this Self Certification website at www.kaneland.org/covid and log in using your Tyler Parent Email and Password.

  2. Students will NOT be required to show the pass (electronic or paper copy) each day. Staff members will have a list of students that need to certify (because they did not complete the certification by 8:00 a.m.) and will use the list to verify that each student is healthy each day.

Devices

Please ensure that you or your child charges their device daily to come prepared with a fully charged device to school.

PE / Recess Reminder

As spring weather varies in temperatures from day to day and morning to afternoon, please ensure that you are sending your child with different layers of clothing as they will be utilizing outdoor space more often for mask breaks, PE, and during their scheduled recess time.

Kaneland's Change in Learning Structure - Elementary Level

Over the next few weeks, our Kaneland students will be returning to in-person learning 5 days a week for the first time in nearly a year for all those families and students choosing to return. Remote students that have chosen the remote learn structure will remain remote students. While many students and families have long waited and are excited for this day to come, it does not necessarily come without anxiety. In many ways, this return will be like the start of a new school year when it is natural for all children to have some butterflies about all the new experiences that lie ahead. We should expect that children will be experiencing increased anxiety about going back into the classroom every day.

Please know that KST is in a good place and does not anticipate any need for students to change classes or teachers. As a staff, we will work to make this transition as smooth as possible, but of course, it will take support from families as well.

Important Dates to Remember:

Wednesday, March 24th - NO SCHOOL - Teacher Planning Day

Thursday, March 25th - Friday, March 26th - Mrs. Aversa will reach out to families who have chosen a different learning structure.

Monday, March 29th - Friday, April 2nd - SPRING BREAK

Monday, April 5th - School Improvement Day (No Student Attendance)

Tuesday, April 6th - Asynchronous Learning (please note the change from the originally scheduled date on 4/7)

Wednesday, April 7th - First Day ALL In-Person Learning and Remote Students Resume.

Here are some ideas for parents to help ease their children's anxiety with this transition.

Stay Informed

  • Having a solid understanding of the plans for in-school learning at your school will help you to better address any of your children's concerns. Read emails, newsletters and participate in any virtual meetings that your school may offer as a means to share information about return to school plans.

Maintain Open Communication

  • Consistently check-in with your children and keep open lines of communication to gauge how they are feeling. Make sure your children know that you are available to talk if they have concerns about the return to school...or about any concerns that arise during a school day.

  • Give your children space to express themselves and validate their feelings. Taking the time to listen allows parents to more clearly understand what their children are feeling most anxious about. It then provides an opportunity to offer acknowledgment of their concerns and a chance to direct children towards thinking of something they can do about it.

  • Let your children know that it is normal to feel anxious in new situations. Remind them of times they have started something new and overcome fears in the past. Emphasize that learning to adapt to changes leads to a growth mindset, greater confidence, and resiliency.

  • Avoid talking about your concerns in front of your children as they will pick up on your anxiety and likely incorporate your worries into their own thoughts about school.

  • Let your children know you care. If your children are anxious about school, consider sending personal notes in their lunch box or book bag to let them know you are thinking about them.

Review Safety Procedures

  • You cannot guarantee that your children will not get ill, but you can express confidence that schools have done months of planning to minimize risk and keep everyone safe. Assure your children that all reasonable safety precautions are being taken and they can do their part by following safety protocols. Review the safety protocols that you know are in place at their school.

  • Ask your children what they have heard, or what they know about the return back to school. This will allow you to dispel any myths or rumors that they may have heard from friends or through social media. Stick to the facts in a reassuring manner.

Demonstrate an Optimistic Outlook

  • Set the tone. Children absorb their parent’s anxiety, so demonstrate optimism and confidence for your children.

  • Model a growth mindset by recognizing that we all have the capacity to change, grow, and develop. When children see growth mindsets in action around them, they are much more likely to internalize and apply this way of thinking for themselves.

  • Reframing events and circumstances into a more favorable view goes a long way in promoting a more hopeful outlook. It is not always easy to do, but it is mentally healthier for us to look at all we have learned and overcome from the past year, rather than focus on all that we may have lost.

  • Let your children know that it is natural to be a little nervous anytime we start something new, but that they will be fine once they become familiar with their classmates, teachers, and school routines.

Model Positive Coping and Problem-Solving Skills

  • Children naturally learn through observing others in their environment. Demonstrate coping and problem-solving behavior whenever you can. While children learn through observing actions, they need to observe the language in use too. A great way to do this is to verbalize the steps you are taking to handle a problem of your own...and when a problem is still not easily fixed, let them see how you respond to that disappointment in a healthy way.

  • If the first few days upon returning to school are a little challenging, try not to overreact. Young children, in particular, may experience separation anxiety or shyness initially, but teachers are trained to help them adjust. If you drop them off, try not to linger. Reassure your children that you love them, will think of them during the day, and will be back. Remain calm and positive.

Reinforce Children's Ability to Cope

  • Talk with your children about ways to manage a difficult situation on their own. Work through examples of challenges faced during prior school years and how your children met them.

  • When your child gets stuck using the same strategy that is not working, encourage them to ask themselves, “What is a different way I could try this? How else could this be done?”

  • Encourage your children to tell you, a teacher or another trusted adult at school if a problem persists. Asking for help is another way of growing and adding new ideas to one’s personal toolbox.

Remain Flexible

  • There is one thing that is certain...not everything is going to go as planned. Prepare your children for this. Let them know that things may change, but you will be there to provide them information as you have it and support along the way.

Establish Your New Routine

  • Establishing a predictable, consistent routine is a way to feel some certainty during uncertain times. It can make us feel more secure and in control. Start small with a daily “to do” list or expand upon what you may have already put into place. Just do your best to be consistent.

Reestablish Connections

  • Find ways to get your children reacquainted with peers they may not have interacted with in some time. Arrange a time for your children to get together with some of their classmates, virtually or safely in person, before in-person learning starts to help them re-establish positive social relationships.

Make Self-Care a Priority

Know that Resources are Available

  • Although it is normal and expected that your children will be experiencing a greater amount of anxiety during this time of transition, it can be helpful to reassure them that anxiety is an adaptive measure to help protect ourselves against perceived danger. It helps us make good decisions and remember to do things such as washing our hands, wearing a mask, and being conscious of maintaining social distance to help keep all of us healthy.

  • If your children experience anxiety from transitioning to in-person learning that they are struggling to cope with, do not hesitate to reach out for help. Besides the classroom teacher, many other support staff at school are available to assist including the school psychologist or school social worker.
